Upgrade agents

Every time your PatchPilot server is updated, it also ships a matching agent. The Agents page shows which hosts run something else and upgrades them.

The Agents page

Open Agents in the sidebar. At the top it shows the agent version your server ships. The list shows each host with its Agent version, Last seen and a State:

State Meaning
Up to date The host runs the version the server ships
Can upgrade The host runs another version and can upgrade from the portal
Needs installer The host's agent is too old to upgrade itself. Run the installer on it once (below); after that it upgrades from the portal

Upgrade from the portal

  1. Select the hosts under Can upgrade.
  2. Press Upgrade agents.

This creates an agent upgrade job, which you can follow under Jobs like any other job. On each host the agent:

  1. downloads the new version from your server and checks its checksum;
  2. checks that the new program starts and reports the expected version;
  3. swaps it in and restarts the service.

If the new agent does not come up within three minutes, the old one is put back automatically, and the job is marked failed with the reason. The host keeps reporting either way.

Hosts that are already up to date are skipped.

Upgrade by hand

For hosts marked Needs installer, or if you prefer, re-run the installer on the host. No enrollment token is needed: the host keeps its identity. The Upgrade by hand box on the Agents page has the commands with your address filled in:

Hosts installed from the .deb or .rpm package can also be upgraded by installing the newer package over the old one.
